On the flip side, family and old friends are thousands of miles away, forcing you to be pretty independent. Throw in the language barriers that exist off post, and sometimes it’s just easier to stay home.
My husband’s unit had to be away for a week this July, so I got in touch with another new mom in the company to see if she was interested in taking day trips with me while the unit was gone. The result was a week of laughter, tears, road trips, and memories; Day Trip Week.
Some of the highlights:
-Drinking milkshakes and cow-watching at a local dairy farm called the Kuhstallcafe.
-Getting caught in a rainstorm while hiking to the Kallmünz Castle Ruins.
-Exploring the Wolfstein Castle Ruins in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz with friends.
-Enjoying old world views from the cafe at the Veste Oberhaus in Passau, Germany.
-Failing at—and laughing at—our attempt to hike with strollers from the Veste Oberhaus to the Passau Altstadt.
It’s easy to stay at home, especially with a young baby, but I’m glad we didn’t choose that option. Easy gets you your living room. A little bit of adventure got us to three castles, a dairy farm, and five cities in five days.
I’ll take adventure over easy any day.
