That Time I Stepped in Dog Poo in Venice

Cleaning Dog Poo Off My ShoeWhen I imagined Venice, I envisioned romantic gondola rides, candle-lit pasta dinners and wine. What I didn’t envision was a pile of dog poo as big as my face.

You think I’m kidding.

The pile of dog poo was so large that I never felt the concrete beneath it when my sandal landed in it.

It was so large that my shoe slid, and I nearly lost my footing.

It was so large that it was absolutely impossible not to see it unless you’re me, and you’re having such a great time with your family that you forget to watch where you’re going.

Dipping My Sandal in the Venetian Canal

While my husband took pictures (of me and my dog poo) and my sister-in-law and brother-in-law made respectable attempts not to laugh at me, I gained a very new and very unromantic appreciation for Venice’s beautiful canals. How else was I going to get the dog poo off of my sandal?

If you ask me in ten years, I might not remember what I ate that weekend in Venice, but you know what? That pile of poo was so large that it’ll always make our once-in-a-lifetime trip to Venice stand out a little more vividly in my mind.

Some of the best travel moments aren’t the ones that go smoothly, but are the unplanned ones.

My philosophy? Embrace those unexpectedly sticky (and sometimes smelly) moments. They just add to the adventure. 🙂

  1. Ewwwww….. certainly made for fun photos, memories, and a great blog post! Thanks for the smiles 🙂

  2. Hahaha this cracked me up! Also, people don’t tell you how much Venice stinks…I mean, it can get REALLY stinky. Luckily we only experienced the stink a few times, but still…yuck!

    • Yes!! SO stinky! It was a beautiful city, don’t get me wrong, but there was a lot of still water, and we visited during one of the hottest months of the year. I hope you’re doing well, Jessica! Thanks for visiting me. 🙂

  3. Oh man, yuck…. but at least you are sure to look where you step nowadays 🙂 There is dog poo literally allll over the streets here in Czech Rep that it’s almost become some kind of national joke, at least with the expats. But in over 2 years, I’ve only stepped in it once! (proud achievement)

    • Cynthia, we managed (thankfully!) to avoid the dog poop in Prague in November. I’ll keep your words in mind if we visit again while we’re living in Germany. Thanks so much for stopping by!

  4. haha this was a fun read – definitely something you will remember forever! Dog poop is definitely something I see A TON of in Europe, sadly.

    • I’ve noticed a lot of dog poop here, too. It surprises me in Germany, because Germans are generally pretty tidy and very environmentally aware. Seeing any kind of trash is strange here, but the dog poop always makes me do a double take. Thanks for stopping by, Marianne!

  5. Ahhhh I HATE stepping in dog poo! It makes me want to throw my shoes away haha… but seriously. I will make sure to look out for the dog poop when we go to Venice 🙂 That’s a beautiful baby wrap by the way. When I saw the first photo that’s the first thing I thought before I realized you were scraping something off your shoe!

  6. This is truly funny! I love your attitude about it though!
