Happy New Year!
This morning was Race #20 of “Running Through Deployment”; the Rescue Run 10K in Colorado Springs. This race was special because it was the first race my husband and I ran together after his homecoming from Afghanistan a little over one month ago!
I became familiar with El Paso County Search & Rescue — a nonprofit volunteer team dedicated to saving lives through search, rescue, and education — this summer when I volunteered on the operations team for the Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent. I spent two full days at the summit of the mountain, and I had the opportunity to meet and talk with several Search & Rescue team members during that time. Just a few conversations, and El Paso County Search & Rescue had earned my respect.
The Rescue Run has been around since 1979, and it benefits these hard working Pikes Peak volunteers. There’s a kids’ run, a 5K and a 10K, and true to it’s motto (“Rain, Snow or 20 Below”), the race has never been cancelled by its organizers. We ran the hilly course today in temperatures that hovered right around 20 degrees, and despite the chilly, we had a good run.
I couldn’t be happier to have Nick home from Afghanistan, and it was great to ring in the new year supporting a great cause with Nick by my side. However you celebrated this first day of 2013, I hope you had a great day!
