On Sunday, I ran Race #18 of Running Through Deployment; the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay in Monterey, California.
Monterey and the surrounding areas are home to a number of military installations, the most famous of which are probably the Naval Postgraduate School and the DOD Defense Language Institute.
As a result, there were military volunteers throughout the course, and I saw runners from every branch but Coast Guard. It was touching, then, that of all the military-related stories to share, the race organizers thought that Running Through Deployment would resonate with Big Sur runners.
I’ve removed our last name in the story to the left, which appeared in the Big Sur Half Marathon at Monterey Bay’s race program booklet. It’s exciting to see some good things coming from what’s been a challenging 9-month time apart from Nick, and I hope that our story gives someone else a little bit of strength for their own deployment.
